The past few years were rather dark for Maltese democracy. With a number of scandals dominating the news cycle regularly, this led to new people being disenchanted from entering politics. A number of reforms are required to Maltese democracy, to become efficient and transparent. One of the key changes should definitely include a decent wage increase to Members of Parliament. While at first this might sound controversial, the reality is that with a wage that reflects the input that is required of Members of Parliament. This will put citizens in a better position to expect much more of their representatives.

Also, this will diminish the need for politicians to seek donors and cosy up to those who are seeking to influence the decision-making process. Should this be coupled with a new term-limit, the likelihood of corrupt individuals holding on to their position of power will be diminished.
